Self-Worth & Self-Belief

So what is Self-Worth and Self-Belief? What does it mean to you?

Well for me it’s about how I value myself and the opinion I have of myself. That I believe I am a good person and deserve to have a good life and good things happen to me, if I work hard and live an honest life.

Now don’t get me wrong I haven’t always felt like that. We all have a story to tell, but it’s whether we let that story affect us and how we feel about ourselves.

When I was growing up I was bullied quite badly. I believed for some skewed reason that I deserved it, that I wasn’t meant to have a happy or good life, but as I grew up and went out to work in the big wide world I soon realised I had a choice, in fact I had 2 choices. Firstly, I could carry on feeling sorry for myself and let people bully me or take advantage of me, not by hurting me physically at this stage, but certainly mentally. I could let my ‘inner voice’ drown out everything else and listen to it saying “you’re no good, you’re weak and pathetic, you’re thick, you have no power’ etc… Yes these are some of the things I heard the script in my head shouting at me. My other choice was to stand up for myself and re-invent myself. Once I started doing that, things started to change for the better.

So where do we start?

Maybe ask yourself;

  • Who you are and how do you see yourself?
  • What do you think of yourself and what do others think of you?
  • What positive aspects and attributes do others see in you?
  • What is it that actually got you to where you are today?

Accept that as a human being you are fallible. We all are. We are not perfect, we’re not meant to be. We are all here on our own journey. We all have strengths and weaknesses, so how about being honest with yourself, go on write down now what you are really good at, your strengths. What your abilities are. It’s these strengths that will help build your self-confidence, your self-esteem and help you to realise your true self, your true potential.

It can also be very helpful to look at yourself through the eyes of someone that truly loves you and write these things down too. These are great exercises to help you on your journey of self-empowerment.

You have the power so go on seize it with both hands!
